Good information. I think too many times people tend to jump on the “band wagon” of social media just to say they are doing it, but forget to strategize a plan. I could definitely use the tool more consistently, but want to keep it professional. I am following you on Twitter and I look forward to more information like this.

I agree. I’m surprised how often businesses mis-interpret “building relationships” to mean tweeting constantly about mundane, personal info.

Thank you for this post, I am helping out a friends small biz (www.kurufootwear.com) with twitter (@kuru_footwear) and other social media programs. It was interesting to compare ourselves to these other business in your surveys. I appreciate your post, I am also excited to try out a few of the tools that you mentioned here.

I’m confounded by how many luminaries in my field tweet about airport delays, Halloween costumes, and how they overslept.

Professional and Personal Personae:
Twitter users might consider having a minimum of two Twitter personae to match the profile of the followers. For example, a persona for professional tweets that are informative and enlightening to followers AND a personal persona for the insipid blather that many would-be professionals trowel out.
